Some thoughts on this opioids and heroin use conversation, which has dominated headlines and is now included in presidential debates....

The idea of covering the crack epidemic with this amount of empathy is unimaginable to me: It's pure fantasy, and I'm not a fiction writer.
-
All that said: now that doctors are talking about the decision to prescribe opioids versus NSAIDs seems to be missing something: marijuana.
-
Marijuana is a safe, effective pain management drug — but it's still tainted in this conversation about opioids. It's not even talked about.
-
NSAIDSs are sometimes not powerful enough, and opioids are sometimes too powerful, so why not prescribe marijuana?
-
And yes, I understand marijuana is still banned in several states, but why are doctors not talking about opening up marijuana as an option?
-
The U.S. is so backwards when it comes to this: a safe, effective pain management drug is available but you're too scared to talk about it.
-
I don't know but maybe federal regulators should investigate pharmaceutical executives with conspiracy for blocking marijuana to treat pain.
