My people have a long history with the Catholic church. And I don't know that people always recognize agency where it's due.

-
My people helped the church establish missions in what is now Brazil and Argentina hundreds of years ago. We weren't tricked into doing so.
-
I descend from a man who scribed letters to the church 300 years ago, demanding to remove a priest because he didn't speak Guarani.
-
Nevertheless, for however well we worked with the Jesuits, the church itself didn't care. They did us nasty.
-
This is complicated, ok? The Jesuits, the church, the Indians, and the missions is not one story. It's hundreds.
-
What Junipero Serra did to the Indians in North America the Jesuits didn't do to the Indians in South America. It didn't go down like that.
-
When slavers were raising Guarani villages to capture my ancestors, those same ancestors were seeking refuge with the Jesuits.
-
I get that you want to see it one way. If I only ever knew about Junipero Serra, I'd only see it one way, too.
-
But you don't understand Latin America, or the part of Latin America I'm from in particular‚ and what happened there. And what happens now.
-
Like I said, it's complicated. On the day Pope Francis canonizes the evil known as Serra, he also blesses Sophia Cruz.
-
Sophia Cruz, a 5-year-old in braids and a huipil with her indigenous, undocumented parents from Oaxaca cheering her on.
-
It's complicated: An indigenous girl broke barricade, hoping a white Argentine pope can make it so the U.S. doesn't deport her parents.
-
You don't wanna see Sophia Cruz and her parents as indigenous? And/or you wanna take away their agency? Cool, whatever.
-
I see some tweeps I really respect in my mentions that will never see any of this like I do. I get it. Like I said, it's complicated. <3 <3
