For starters, Ottawa, Canada has a sanctioned graffiti wall. I mean, that alone. Is graffiti still graffiti once it's sanctioned? Ionno.

But here's the thing: Ottawa has a place where people can do graffiti. You've heard of graffiti in its modern, wild style iteration.
-
Here's the thing: wild style graffiti didn't ¡poof! appear out of thin air. Wild style graffiti came out of black and brown people.
-
You can watch this film from the 80s called Wild Style. It'll explain where this style of graffiti that all these people do came from.
-
Fast forward several decades, and you have places like Ottawa sanctioning white youth essentially doing black graffiti.
-
Yet when black people decide to take over the sanctioned graffiti wall with "Black Lives Matter," the white graffiti writers paint over it.
-
So black artists team up and paint a gorgeous Sandra Bland tribute mural. But then some white graffiti writers get mad—and paint over THAT.
-
Somehow, youth doing graffiti in Ottawa managed to essentially be on some white power trip. Marking "their" territory. With "their" graff.
-
The Sandra Bland tribute mural is now a site of physical, artistic, racial, and political contention. It'll be worth watching.
