Why People of Color Don’t Frequent National Parks:http://www.colorlines.com/articles/why-people-color-don%E2%80%99t-frequent-national-parks …

While the
@NatlParkService formalized the "protection" of the outdoors, the way it carried it out was vastly different across racial lines. -
For poc, going to a national park means 1) to get there, you're gonna drive through some scary rural areas where white folks have guns...
-
And 2) you stand to run in to mostly white forest rangers. Scared of authority on the street? Can be even scarier in the middle of a forest.
-
If the National Park Service is real about wanting to diversify its visitors, it would do well to confront its racist history.
-
@aurabogado Yep, I made this very argument about need for National Park Service to confront racist history last year: http://grist.org/climate-energy/want-to-attract-a-new-generation-to-the-national-parks-find-a-few-new-rangers/ … - 1 more reply

@aurabogado@NatlParkService Please elaborate; very interesting. Never heard before. I mean, founded by imperialist conservationist, yes. -
@slenderbutter Sure! Not sure what else to add on Twitter, but might be able to answer specific questions if you want... -
@aurabogado OK, thank you! was there a specific public land grant project, or scheme pushed by a white supremacist group? -
@slenderbutter ah, ok. Well the ideas of conservation and nature in the U.S. are essentially founded ok white supremacy. -
@slenderbutter white folks who thought that they had to save nature from Indians, etc—a formal part of colonial settlement. -
@aurabogado@slenderbutter not to mention the fact that national parks were whites-only until way late in the game -
@quicksilvre@aurabogado Excellent point. Also, the idea of "camping", as recreation & leisure is a white middle class construct. -
@slenderbutter@quicksilvre Yes! Aside from race, conservation hinged on the idea that working-class whites couldn't appreciate nature. - 1 more reply

@aurabogado@NatlParkService But isn't the assumption that POC would want to do what whites do also white-supremacist? -
@ThaddeusRussell Are you white? -
@aurabogado Depends on who you ask. And does that determine the answer to my question? -
@ThaddeusRussell I'm asking you. Are you white? -
@aurabogado No. I'm not white. At all. Now what's your answer to my question? -
@ThaddeusRussell That's funny, being that you describe yourself as a "as an egghead white boy," http://www.thenervousbreakdown.com/dswills/2010/10/an-interview-with-thaddeus-russell/ … -
@ThaddeusRussell Bc it would be absurd to have a white man tell me, a woman of color, that I'm a white supremacist because I like hiking. -
@aurabogado That's funny, because I said nothing of the sort. - 7 more replies
