I say this as someone who nevertheless loves national parks: the
@NatlParkService was founded on white supremacy. -
While the
@NatlParkService formalized the "protection" of the outdoors, the way it carried it out was vastly different across racial lines. -
For poc, going to a national park means 1) to get there, you're gonna drive through some scary rural areas where white folks have guns...

And 2) you stand to run in to mostly white forest rangers. Scared of authority on the street? Can be even scarier in the middle of a forest.

If the National Park Service is real about wanting to diversify its visitors, it would do well to confront its racist history.
