"But we have a black president! And I know a black person who drives a nice car! Where is this systemic racism you speak of?"

Like systemic racism isn't visible in health disparities. In education. In employment. In wealth. In incarceration. In life. And in death.

Want a current example of hot systemic racism works? Look at the Apple Watch. It won't work if you're black.

Apple created a system that essentially uses a green light to read your heart rate. That green light doesn't work on black skin.

It's not like Apple intentionally decided to make a watch that doesn't work for black people. But intent doesn't matter. Impact does.

@aurabogado I'm black. My Apple Watch successfully measures my heart rate. Melanin != tattoo ink. This is not difficult to understand.

@aurabogado source? I had only heard of a problem with black tattoos so far.

@aurabogado Thanks. They've changed the title to remove "dark skin" at some point, and the body has "tattoos report" and "darker skin may".

@aurabogado (Definitely not saying systemic racism doesn't exist, just that I haven't _yet_ seen a single black person report this problem)

@marcmagus So, @qz has changed its article several times but isn't noting it. Which is odd.

@aurabogado @iano The problem is that the ink pigments beneath the skin absorb the light emitted by the LEDs on the underside of the watch.
