In 1958, Joan Williams was crowned Miss Pasadena. She was supposed to ride in
@RoseParade, but was denied from because she was black. -
Keep in mind that the
@RoseParade takes place in Pasadena, which denies its place as one of the more historically black places in L.A. -
L.A. is pretty much my hometown. I know Pasadena for
@RoseParade & little else. Guess what it should be known for? Incredible black people. -
Pasadena is most famous for the
@RoseParade. Whatever. It should be most famous for being home to Octavia Butler. -
And it's not just Octavia Butler. Pasadena is home to Jackie Robinson of all people! Like, that man CHANGED THE COURSE OF AMERICA.
-
As my friend
@LexStepp mentioned to me, Pasadena's two high schools should be renamed. One to "Jackie," the other to "Robinson." -
Then there's Pasadena City College, probably most infamous for housing misogynist racist Hugo Schwyzer.
-
But you know what Pasadena City College should be famous for? Its black alum like Octavia Butler, Jackie Robinson and John Singleton.
-
So if you're watching the
@RoseParade today, keep in mind you're watching a display of an entrenched anti-blackness. -
The
@RoseParade is allowing the black Miss Pasadena to finally parade FIFTY SEVEN YEARS after she was crowned. Welcome to 20 fucking 15. -
So if you watch the
@RoseParade, keep some of this in mind. And, if you wanna watch a better feed, just check for#BLMdena. -
And, if
#BLMdena disrupts the@RoseParade today and that makes you mad, just remember the degree to which this event parades anti-blackness. - 1 more reply
