@aurabogado Type of research matters? Census data is used all the time - w limits on parsing out a single person/household.

@JaymeMaybe Type of research does matter. I don't know what Census protocols are. I do know that the academe has rules for human subjects. -
@aurabogado I'm not a researcher, but I've done tech support for them on Census data. Idea is to allow group analysis w no ID info. -
@JaymeMaybe Ok, but we're not talking about the Census. We're talking USC and the academe, and they have rules for this.

@aurabogado a standard for IRB is supposed to be: can the participants be identified & will they be harmed? -
@nanaslugdiva Particularly struck by the word "harm." Especially when it comes to commonly held notion that black people don't feel pain. -
@aurabogado and there is this too.

@aurabogado IRB requirements are based on study type, if users can be identified by tweets, and public vs. protected accounts. -
@bellhookedme And if users can be identified, they should be given the choice whether to participate, right?

@aurabogado hmm, hadn't thought of this -- I was considering it like a content study of news articles. -
@dogunderwater A news article is a product. A tweep on#BlackTwitter is a human being. -
@aurabogado this is true, but is the study of the people or their tweets, I guess. thanks for bringing it up.

@aurabogado Yup... They have to have filled out an IRB form which i think is Institutional Review Board that details consent of subjects. -
