@aurabogado can you elaborate on "false equivalents"?
-

-
@mwarr Sure. One example: a fair-skinned person whose parents immigrated from Mexico will live a different reality than a black person.

@aurabogado great question.been thinking about WOC wanting to believe in the inherent solidarity but are we doing the work to build unity -
@parishatcher And does the term "women of color" even suggest that I have to do that kind of work? Or that we're all in the same situation? -
@aurabogado Right! Some have been culled into thinking WOC = same struggle instead of shared/parallel struggle.

@aurabogado I don't think it's inherently violent. It's useful to have a term to talk about people who are not seen as white. -
@rebelwerewolf I hear you. But what about self-identified white Latinos who use the term because of their last name? -
@aurabogado I'm not white Latino or even Latino, so I can't say. I've found whiteness to be a nebulous category. Eye of the beholder.

@aurabogado weird how many words to categorize different tribes in their own language, simply means "People". -
@RedSobabaquie@aurabogado Diné, Numunuu, Salish, etc. or sometimes aren't the names translated as "people of ____ " describing a location? -
@AdrianaMaestas@aurabogado location is usually the secondary description. Primary is "people". So, yes to a degree.
