@aurabogado Not imo. Your comment about OITNB completely lacks context of how the woc characters are presented.

@xyznatalie You mean the context where Tastey is campaigning when she's yelling about fried chicken? -
@aurabogado Nope, more like Sophia's campaign speech, their backstory's that tell why they're in prison/how prison has dehumanized them -
.
@xyznatalie Yes, I, too remember how Sophia got pushed off the stage for the speech about friend chicken. -
@aurabogado context matters tho. The reason they do that is bc they c how hopeless the system is to actually achieve anyofSophia's ambitions -
.
@xyznatalie Part of the reason there's so little hope in the system is because white people continue to be the ones telling our$tories. -
@aurabogado I agree. That's not the issue I'm arguing though.

@aurabogado@Colorlines Watching the scenes of "Crazy Eyes" is especially painful. I'd be interested in your thoughts. -
.
@exfkaty@Colorlines Taystee campaign for fried chicken, too. OITNB reproduces the worst stereotypes that exist in the white imagination. -
@aurabogado@exfkaty@Colorlines And while Piper is advocating for better conditions, WOC (besides Sofia) are portrayed as too dumb to care. -
@RaniaKhalek@aurabogado@exfkaty@Colorlines I didn't see the WOC being represented as too dumb... but aware that the system doesn't care -
@RaiElise@Colorlines agreed. It does use stereotypes and really we all fit some but it doesn't end there each characters story unfolds. -
@daniellemkali@Colorlines@RaiElise@aurabogado Exactly! To point out the one "Fried chicken" moment is the actual race reducation argument -
.
@mathewrodriguez@daniellemkali@Colorlines@RaiElise Oh, trust me, I can point out many more. -
@aurabogado@mathewrodriguez@daniellemkali@Colorlines@RaiElise i do think that the show falls short in its representation of latin@s. - 7 more replies

@aurabogado@Colorlines I tend to agree. Look at the simplistic and racist portrayal of the (one) Asian character, for instance. -
@aurabogado@Colorlines A whole host of issues with#OITNB, but that's one area where the writers don't even TRY to tackle racist tropes.
