I know it’s rude to use a phone during a movie but the audience for this @FirstManMovie screening is like 5 people. I grabbed my phone to fact-check a scene where Houston is eating Chinese takeout in 1966. First Chinese restaurant didn’t open until 1969. https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/amp/China-Garden-oldest-Chinese-restaurant-in-Houston-12625341.php …

Also, it looks like Armstrong is using a pen during the Gemini 8 mission. How does ink work in space? Does it? Wouldn’t they just use pencils?

          Gemini 8 was in 1966.

And before 1968, I believe there was no working "space pen" - the device was ready for Apollo 🙂

There was a type of ink/pen that was developed for space - would write in any direction. Fisher developed it I think. Still available today - handy for writing in the field.

It's a Fisher space pen, developed to use in space because pencils cause debris and are flammable. https://www.spacepen.com/

The Fischer Space Pen was a great souvenir I bought at the Kennedy Space Center in 1987. It had a pressurized ink compartment allowing flow even writing upside down. No idea if already available for astronauts in '66.

First flight of the Fisher space pen was Apollo 7 (per NASA historical office). So not Gemini.

I was watching a documentary about the US-USSR space rivalry, and this came up. The Russians were making fun of all the trouble NASA went through for the pen when they just used the pencil.

I think mechanical pencils were used. Could that resemble a pen?

NASA invented a pen. They spent a ton of money on it. They were often given as gifts... “this is what the astronauts use!” Russia’s space program used pencils.
