People keep asking me how we got here. Here’s what I keep asking: How many tv shows are there that feature immigrant families? How many films center the mixed-status families we all belong to? Can you name five immigrant latina directors? How about five latino producers?

What immigrant latina poet do you turn to often? Who is your favorite latinx writer? Don’t say Junot Díaz. What about an award-winning latina newspaper editor? Can you name all the immigrant latinx columnists at The Nation, The Atlantic and The New Yorker combined? Are there any?

It’s easier for the general public to believe that latinxs immigrants are animals when we’re rarely represented as anything else. We’re never experts. We’re hardly human. What do you do with animals? You put them in cages. And then some.

This isn’t a full explanation of the underlying reasons for how we got here, of course. It’s just been on my mind every time I turn on my tv or read a new article or column. End rant.

Maria Teresa Kumar. I only do
@msnbc now...and even then sparingly. They have been covering immigration issues very well imho over the last week. Otherwise, they don't touch it unless it is a hot button news item.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
