Our map relies on information we obtained pursuant to a FOIA request -- it's ORR's full list from June 2017. Other publications have published a map of shelters. Ours go way beyond that to include secure, staff secure, therapeutic staff-secure and residential treatment centers.

So, can we like shut these all down as unlicensed facilities?
@abogadatejana -
These are actually state-licensed facilities in nearly all cases.
@PeteOlson has called for the closure Shiloh, a facility where@reveal has reported children are being systematically drugged with psychotropics. -
Thanks Ziva. Wondering what needs to be done to then un-license these. Surely, it seems to be against the spirit of Flores to be detaining children in conditions that may be similar to Shiloh.
-
In Texas, four children died between 1993 and 2011 in a facility operated by the same entity that now operates Shiloh. State & feds continue to license & contract with them. I’d look to the courts for real future action.
-
But state licenses can be taken away, and it's easier to do in some states than others. I'm hopeful CA lawmakers can just ban and deny licensing to these facilities altogether. SB29 does forbid any new licenses/contracts.

They can be that’s true.

The Pleasant Hill shelter is child shelter is in my backyard. What can we do about it?
@CIYJA -
See if the entity that licenses them is willing to do a surprise safety inspection? Fire Marshall surprise inspection? Health department? They can keep out press & public, but inspectors can get shirty & yank licenses.
