There's a lot of persistent confusion about asylum and asylum-seekers at the moment. Some of that has to do with new and stringent rules under Trump that folks don't fully understand. Some of that has to do with Obama-era practices that people didn't pay attention to. A thread.

People are still presenting themselves at ports of entry to claim asylum. But some are left with no choice but to cross without authorization. Border Patrol is now stopping people before they reach a port of entry. This is new.https://www.texasmonthly.com/politics/immigrant-advocates-question-legality-of-latest-federal-tactics/ …

Sessions announced a new zero tolerance policy for anyone caught crossing the border. But Operation Streamline has been around since 2005. A common assumption is that people who are caught crossing the border and sentenced to prison time are automatically deported. That's not exactly true. Most are, but it's not always the case. No one, that I know of, has written about this yet.

That's not the case anymore.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/07/us/children-immigration-borders-family-separation.html?pagewanted=all …

Separating children and parents at the border is currently only happening to those caught crossing the border without authorization -- not to those who claim asylum at ports of entry. (But make sure to see above for what's happening before people even reach those ports.)
