A woman was kidnapped by Salvadoran guerrillas. She was made to watch her husband dig his own grave before being murdered. She was enslaved. She is not eligible for asylum because cooking/cleaning AS A SLAVE UNDER THREAT OF DEATH is considered material support to terrorists.https://twitter.com/DOJ_EOIR/status/1004456969208508416 …

This is a huge decision by the Board of Immigration Appeals. It's been retweeted literally one time. Only two people responded to it on Twitter. Again: a woman kept as a literal slave is barred from asylum. This screenshot from the dissenting opinion.pic.twitter.com/VlIqZprGFm

Screenshot reads: "I cannot conclude that the menial and incidental tasks that the respondent performed—as a slave—for Salvadoran guerrillas, including cooking, cleaning, and washing clothes, are of “the same class” as the enumerated forms of assistance set forth in the statute. The enumerated
examples all involve items that either can directly be used to plan or carry"

Nah. "Persecuted and terrorized Brown woman born outside the US is kept out by xenophobic and racist laws". That's what this really is.

It's more complicated than that. It's the horrific historical entanglement of U.S. MATERIAL SUPPORT to the Salvadoran military to murder tens-thousands of its own citizens, AND the silence of the Left in recognizing its own abuses, come together to victim-blame the asylum-seeker

So the present xenophobic and racist laws against Central American migrants are the the most recent layer in more than a century's worth of American capitalist-driven exploitation and atrocities in El Salvador and throughout Central America.

Unbelievable! But as someone who formerly worked helping asylum applicants, I’ve heard and seen injustice just as bad. I worked with another case of a woman kidnapped and fortured, and not granted asylum. The pain this woman must be feeling is intense! Shame to this judge!

Yeah. I am working on an asylum case that follows a similar logic. It took awhile for the Trump administration to catch up to the asylum part of the deportation regime. But it’s happening.

The US gov used to love recognizing the victims of its ebemies. Now its just so afraid of brown people it doesnt even do that. Ditto w Cubans.

Horrible as Sessions is, this isn't entirely on him. The BIA's decision is based on a decision from 2016; the 2nd Circuit agreed with the reasoning. This is a reminder of how unjust the asylum system always is, no matter who is president or AG. https://www.justice.gov/eoir/file/865856/download …

Craziness. I read through this opinion today, and the the 9th Circ opinion that came to the same conclusion. Just nutty.

By the same reasoning anyone held in Auschwitz materially supported the Nazis and thus wouldn't be able to seek asylum. That doesn't seem evil at all.

bigger problem is calling the liberation forces in El Salvador "terrorists" when over 90% of all killings and 99% of all torture was done by US-backed dictatorship and their right wing death squads
