The Guatemalan military, which was backed by the US, killed more than 30,000 indigenous peoples like Claudia during that time. A person like Claudia can claim asylum at a port-of-entry; she can also claim it once she's in the U.S., regardless of whether she entered with authorization. This is the law, Jesse.

In case there's any confusion, Jesse: crossing into the U.S. without authorization is not punishable by death. There are lots of things we don't yet know about this case; but if your gripe is that people should follow laws, please take the time to learn about them yourself.
