Hi Jesse. Yes, there are laws in Guatemala. Those laws meant nothing during its recent civil war that lasted nearly 40 years. The Guatemalan military, which was backed by the US, killed more than 30,000 indigenous peoples like Claudia during that time. It was a genocide. https://twitter.com/avalaraeon/status/1000085101122859008 …

Here's what the "immigration rules" say, Jesse: People who can establish a well-founded fear of persecution based on being part of a social group may be eligible for asylum. People like Claudia may be eligible for protection in the US based on the UN Convention Against Torture.

A person like Claudia can claim asylum at a port-of-entry; she can also claim it once she's in the U.S., regardless of whether she entered with authorization. This is the law, Jesse.

In case there's any confusion, Jesse: crossing into the U.S. without authorization is not punishable by death. There are lots of things we don't yet know about this case; but if your gripe is that people should follow laws, please take the time to learn about them yourself.

@aurabogado Can Jesse tell me why the Spanish, French & Brits didn't learn about the immigration laws of the Wampanoag, the Onondaga, the Massasoit, the Pequot, the Navajo, the Crow, the Alabama, the Iroquois, the Adirondack, the Shoshone, the Hawaiians, the Taino, the Arawak? - 1 more reply

Generations are raised/trained to survive on idea that getting to the states is life or death. Even w/ knowledge of the dangers of being considered an "illegal." How difficult is it to change that they ask. Yet ask a US nationalist to change their own learned patterns of hate...

So her ignorance gives her any right she chooses? Well, then the law be damned!

Maybe try reading the whole thread. Spoiler: it's legal to request Asylum and the US has federal laws that permit this, and is signatory to international laws that require it.

Aura it sounds like running the gauntlet of entering a country illegally is a horrible idea. Are there no cities, towns, other countries much closer that Claudia could have entered? Illegal border crossings are bound to become less safe as Amercan priorities shift.
