Maybe stop telling random women how to have sex. So creepy that men do this.

I joined as senior editor the week after the 2020 elections. I described it as "a small but mighty" food publication. Now, the small and mighty has fallen. All editorial employees — other than publisher Jeffrey Kittay — are being laid off. I wish I really knew why.

I am relieved this news is now public, but also pained because it makes it more real. The last week has been one of the most overwhelming and confusing professional experiences of my life—and this is my second layoff in three years.

So I've read the Bible and nowhere in it did I find God ever telling Eve not to eat the apple. He told Adam not to eat the apple; Eve conveniently gets blamed. Flash forward two thousand years and these people are still blaming women for the choices we make:

Unconfirmed: Spanish language media is reporting that Lizelle Herrera may have purchased an abortion drug in neighboring Mexico. After taking the drug in January at home in Texas, she was hospitalized. If this is true, that means she was arrested three months later.

Of course she's latina; of course she's from the RGV.

Little else seems as important as the arrest of Lizelle Herrera, a 26-year-old in jail on a half-a-million-dollar bond arrested on an indictment for murder, following a self-induced abortion.

Also false. First of all, no human being is illegal. And, living in the United States without documentation is not a crime under the law. It's a civil matter before adjudicators.

The presumption of innocence *exists*. As reporters, we can factually write that someone "has been charged for improper entry," if someone has indeed been charged. What we can't do is apply presumptive guilt when the misdemeanor hasn't even been brought before a judge.

The act of entering the US without authorization is an "improper entry" misdemeanor under federal law. It's a charge reserved for adults; children are never charged.

To reporters, again: Stop saying "illegals." Stop saying "illegal immigrant." Stop saying "illegal border crossing." It's racist and since you might not care that it's racist, all of those terms are also factually incorrect.
