When gender and motherhood intersects is a tricky thing. Women are often taught to not speak about how hard it is to work through the young years of children b/c then we’re saying it’s a weakness. I’ve done this. BUT... stay with me...https://twitter.com/alinebmckenna/status/1054213517979631616 …

Nora Ephron was 51 when she directed her 1st movie. Nancy Meyers was 49. Their kids were grown. If you're a women who writes, acts, edits, ADs, etc and you're ready to direct, you're not too old. I was 47. Tell the people you work with your dream. Put your hand up. Men ask. Ask.

We must also be able to acknowledge and support that for many mothers these type of demanding jobs come after the young kid years. I don’t know how you shoot 14 hour days on the regular with a baby but I know some women do. Wonderful.

I, mentally and physically, could not. This should be enough of a reason as to “why we don’t have a bigger body of work.” It’s not an EXCUSE, it’s a REASON. I’m not ashamed im a mother.

My kids are 10, 4 and 15 months. Rachel’s are 5 and 3. Come at me bro bros with your timeline of when in the past 5 years we would have had the free time to work more than we were. (Ps the entertainment industry has no paid maternity leave as a reminder) ✌🏻

Also I believe all the women referenced above hired themselves first. I could be wrong. But you try walking in to book a directing gig with a public Instagram of your baby. No seriously, try it ;)

I so ❤️ your thread. Thank u. Xx as motherhood is a profession. Many women. Exhausted and those who can do - often have hidden resources they often share. Hence rise of post mothership careers is necessary Convo to be having. And why women need that support. As much as young uns.

And it's literally one of the blindest areas of bias we have going. Working mothers are discriminated against all across the land every day and we do not talk about it. It's just implicit and it's there.

It absolutely is. That’s why I said motherhood. Fact remains that women (usually) are still the parent who carries and nurses the baby... often a factor in our careers/lives during the years we need to be climbing at work.
