Before he was famous for stand-up, Steve Martin was a comedy writer for shows like The Smothers Brothers and The Sonny & Cher show. (An interesting aside, I believe he dated blacklisted author Dalton Trumbo's daughter.) His memoir Born Standing Up is a very interesting read.
