The death that resulted from a self driving car. I doubt many humans could have avoided this one.https://twitter.com/tempepolice/status/976585098542833664 …

I totally disagree. If that were a competent human in that car they would have put high beams on. Also robot car should have night vision..hello? If that were one of us we are 100% at fault if not in jail.

It is the drivers responsibility to drive at a safe speed for the condition. If they can’t see things on the road either slow down or use headlights. they were driving too fast for conditions.

The universal speed limit is a safe speed regardless of posted speed. let’s say it was a 6 yr old chasing a ball. A human is looking at the road and all else and anticipates the child. And why no night vision if it’s driving at night?

Irrelevant. If we are going to make cars the responsibile entity in a crash, that means the manufacturer is first to blame. No company will be willing to put out the car that could possibly leave them more responsible than the driver in an accident.

In addition to headlights, the papers I've read on self-drivers say they have several sensors like radar beams.

Robot car should be using radar and spotted her. No point in robot cars if they aren’t much safer than human drivers.

Uber wants to be first to market to boost its ipo. They should be held criminally liable.

But a better question would be: How can a person twice convicted of armed robbery get a job as an Uber driver?!!http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5524031/PICTURED-Felon-wheel-killer-self-driving-Uber-car.html …

Gotta disagree. Having the high beams on and not staring at your phone could have prevented that accident.

Ok the robot car should have more tech to detect the person. But come on. Look the way she cross the road! That's just begging to be hit! She should be deaf and blind to be that careless in crossing the road like that

Pitch black, non-reflective clothes, not in a cross walk, and from the video it appears the victim isn't even looking down the road to see what's coming. Yeah, I'd say if a computer couldn't react fast enough then a human isn't either.
