I’d compare it to looking at a night sky in a modern city. What you see isn’t what’s actually there. You only see a handful of stars. Turn off all the lights and everything is different. Now you see the Milky Way but it was there all along.

What you see when you’re under the influence is “turning off the lights” of our eyes and brain. A closer look at what’s really there overriding details that weren’t necessary as our visual perception was tuned for fitness.
