Every time I am asked to give art-related advice, it often boils down to these three things: 1. Use more reference 2. Focus on representational studies before you jump into imaginative pieces 3. Don't fret about artistic direction or style, these things will happen organically
When do you know it's time to begin moving from representational studies to imaginative pieces? Is it the same as #3?

That's a tough one, (and I am definitely no expert on this, I just share my own experiences and things that have worked for me!), but a good exercise to begin that transition might be to do a study from reference, then try to recreate it without looking at the reference

Great, thanks!
