Example: When I signed up at a jiu-jitsu gym once the guy asked what I did for a living. I told him software engineer and he carefully asks if I would pay a higher monthly rate because of my income. Why? To help subsidize a membership for someone else who can't afford it.

My answer, without thinking, was of course. Why? It's voluntary and localized. I get to see these people every day I go to the gym. I get to interact with them and learn about who they are as a person. The impact of my contribution is localized. That's huge.

Socialism at a large scale is peak inefficiency. More importantly your "fair share" feels like you're burning cash. You don't see a return. To make it work everything needs to be scaled down. Localized. Fewer degrees of separation between contributor and beneficiary.

I hate to burst your bubble, but a true Libertarian would not be even remotely open to Socialism in any form.
-
Even this? What's basically a donation? https://twitter.com/atommorgan/status/1013776320445276161?s=21 …

That's CHARITY, NOT SOCIALISM. please please please do some actual research.
-
What could also be referred to as democratic, voluntary socialism lol.
-
It's not voluntary though. A majority voted to force others to "donate". How is it voluntary to people who don't want to "donate"?
-
I wouldn't agree with that. I provided an example.
-
Your example is voluntary. Democratic socialism is not.
-
That's why my use of Democratic Socialism was misunderstood. In between those words are "voluntary, market created". I have no issues with socialist-ish businesses where participation is voluntary.

So stealing is cool as long as you vote on it? Wtf

Charity is not the same thing as being robbed at gunpoint
-
Which is why I never brought up the use of force.
-
Well obviously the DSA agenda calls for massive wealth redistribution in the name of social justice. If your version of socialism does not involve compulsion wealth distribution than I am all for it, although I do not see how it is still socialism.
-
Yeah maybe not the best term lol.

Isn't that just called "charity"

-
What socialism should be, yes.
-
Aren't we betraying the use of the dictionary by using the two interchangeably? Socialism is centralized or forced... Charity is voluntary.
-
Maybe. But that's why I gave an example as well in addition to my use of the term. Maybe I should have said voluntarism or market based charity. Either way I'm not so scared of the S word that I run even if voluntary precedes it. Same ideal end. Different means.
