    .'s visit to India placed a welcome emphasis on issues affecting the lives of citizens in both countries. Re-centering the role of open societies, & related issues like public health, climate, the Internet, & education plays to a unique strength of the two democracies.

    I was pleased to meet civil society leaders today. The U.S. and India share a commitment to democratic values; this is part of the bedrock of our relationship and reflective of India’s pluralistic society and history of harmony. Civil society helps advance these values.

    The discrimination that some AAPI have recently endured in my country is unacceptable & frankly un-American. But we aren’t trying to hide our mistakes. When a democracy stumbles, everyone can see and hear it. It’s broadcast in loud & living color, not hushed up by the state.

    India has vaccinated a greater percentage of its people than Japan.

    When histories of the pandemic are written, one topic will be how Japan got this so wrong. After living there 6 years, I would have expected max efficiency getting the pop. vaccinated. I underestimated the bureaucratic inflexibility, and now Japan will pay an Olympic-sized price.
