  2. Just had a chance to read this last night. Interesting article by that finds that 1/6 of the gains in health insurance coverage after the ACA were erased in 2017. Medicaid expansion states were protected somewhat.

  3. Bottom line - please don't assume this is a null study on the basis of a p-value that doesn't meet some magic threshold. /END

  4. Moreover, the neat paper by Nguyen et al in also tries to compare "like with like" and finds a positive association between NFL participation and mortality: 3/

  5. We note that comparison groups can be made sharper. In reply to some correspondence, we show that restricting the control group to further (better) match NFL players to replacement players on latent skill health, yields a larger est. hazard: 2/

  6. Medical journals have very specific rules around reporting p-values. As the author on this paper, I think the answer to the question is *yes*, though it is qualified by the small number of deaths in our study sample. A follow up study is in the works. 1/

A few weeks ago, Nix & Lozada posted a paper critiquing our paper on police killings (using Mapping Police Violence data by et al.). We stand by our empirical strategy and our substantive findings. Here is our response.

We finally have an official US estimate of maternal mortality. The figure for 2018 (17.4/100,000 births) is in line with recent estimates from the WHO & UN partners (19 for the year 2017; uncertainty interval 17-21). IHME estimates put this figure at 30. Why the discrepancy? 🤔
