It's unlikely the hospital was deliberately targeted. Ransomware is an ever-present threat to most people on the internet

It's one possibility, yeah. Always worth being careful about links, and keeping your system up to date, etc!

Seems like
#ransomeware like cryptolocker from an e-mail link. Spreads via the infected user unless they are disconnected from network ASAP -
@devonrevenge that is probably the likely cause as anti ransomware software is now being installed -
The thing is anti ransomeware will only work for known ransomeware, its better to back up and use airgap supporting kit
