14 years ago, I wrote a paper on cooperative power saving in computing. The shift to cloud computing means that we will not win this battle. Moving to cloud costs more, in software layers, and increased edge computing works against consolidation.

This is NO such thing as “strip mining” open source technology. Criticizing AWS this way is idiotic and as an argument, fundamentally flawed. Before cloud computing, why hasn’t the same judgement been cast against SAP, Oracle and all of the SaaS category? ...That is the question.

We believe the software and cloud worlds are shifting towards a positive sum free market economy driven by this COSS dynamic (commercial open source) wherein the value capture dimension is getting disaggregated out across ANY constituent and, in particular, business.

Across everything I am building, we codify this “direct commercialization” shift as an entirely new kind of abstract company category itself — one that is actually business model agnostic. We call it “COSS”. Why? Because Open Source in and of itself does NOT capture the nuance.

We are starting to see a MASSIVE shift in technology overall towards this kind of _direct_ monetization of Open Source that is causing many capitalists, founders and analysts to make false conclusions about fairness, markets and competitive dynamics.

Indirectly = open source is used heavily at the core of a company but it is used extremely diversely, broadly, across hundreds or thousands of individuals projects, stitched together, woven into a fabric of sorts.. which ultimately gets compiled into a wholly closed product.

Why is it silly? Because Open Source that can be commercialized, can be commercialized one of two ways: 1) directly, or 2) indirectly. What is the difference? Directly = the core OSS project is the fundamental, singular basis of the root value creation source and foundation.

Now: Let’s contrast “Cloud” ($200B~) which is increasingly commercializing open source _directly_.. and compare that dynamic to “Software” (worth $2T+) which commercializes open source *indirectly*. Focusing the false strip-mining narrative light/emphasis on the former is silly.
