      Right. The issues here are pretty reasonable arguments against trying to use private, individual insurance for health care.

      In particular, what's the value of pricing individual health status risk when that much of risk is unavoidable, short of suicide?

      We would end up wanting to (socially) insure people against the risk of getting charged a high price... which brings us back to square one.

      It's not a risk. If you have an expensive chronic disease, you are quite certain to pay a very high price. Again, not insurance.

      But then you're not being charged a high price. In a given year (which is the period companies price and pay out on) there is no risk.

      There are edge risks of diagnosis with a serious chronic complaint, or trauma. But trauma is not what's driving cost growth.

      Yes, yes. The problem is: you have a risk of being diagnosed with a chronic disease and thereafter being charged high prices!

          Not as distinct from the general population, no. Nor are I suspect most people. (This is even though I've gotten genetic screening.)

          There is zero diabetes in my family. Pretty sure I won't get it either. Breast cancer, heart disease, and autoimmune, on the other hand...

          I had idiopathic (Doctor code for Unknown) virus cause congestive heart failure at 21 years old. It almost killed me it was so "WTF?"

          My kids have 4 autoimmune illnesses diagnosed between 7 and 12 that have no known precedent in family tree. Your certainty is unfounded.
