But the problem is that you can't ramen noodle your way out of some of these student loan numbers. It's not unreasonable for people to take out student loans, but it's completely unreasonable to have people pay $160k for their bachelor's degree.

I had a hundred thousand worth of student loan debt, a $40k salary, and I lived in the most expensive city in America. Also, this was 2002, so I didn't have income-based repayment available.

Sorry, I paid mine by working three part-time jobs and crashing in a friend's closet for a few hours of sleep (doing dishes and chores to compense). (Bit of a lie--I'm still paying the last of mine off. But that's because I didn't vote for a 6.8% rate for mine to pass the ACA)

The feds should cap max student loans for each person at $20k. Watch colleges suddenly be able to provide educations for that amount.

It seems to me that if student loans don't need to be paid back, private lenders will stop offering them—meaning students in need of loans can't get them. What happens then? I assume we'll be told a sweeping gov't takeover of college financing is now needed. Anything I'm missing?
