We have long lines for voting for the same reason we have long lines for major concerts: it's a rare event for which demand occurs all at once. This is why lines are worst in dense areas and poor areas--the only way to alleviate the queues is through massive overcapacity ...https://twitter.com/aaronecarroll/status/1316769291467927552 …

I will never understand why we discuss long lines to vote as a good thing instead of a complete failure of voting infrastructure. It's similar to how I feel about bake sales for medical care as a feel-good story instead of a complete indictment of our failed health care system.

... and massive overcapacity is much more expensive to create in dense areas, while the fiscal capacity is often lower. A completely fair per-capita distribution of federal aid to reduce lines would still leave much longer lines in cities.

Or just switch to vote by mail.

Vote by mail may be an excellent system - if you're willing to accept a good fraction of invalid ballots and invalid votes that can't be counted.https://www.npr.org/2020/08/22/904693468/more-than-550-000-primary-absentee-ballots-rejected-in-2020-far-outpacing-2016 …

But given that the poor cannot afford as much time off work to go spend in lines, doesn't this effectively create a type of poll tax? Fair should be defined by how much it costs a person to vote (in time spent) as a percent of their income not just cost/wait per capita.

Enough polling stations Voting on weekends (fewer people working) Option for prepoll and postal voting for those who need Works in Australia 🤷🏼‍♀️ We have cities of 5 million people, right down to tiny localities. It works

In France, voting takes place in public schools, on a Sunday. It's "free" real estate. There are lots of public schools in the US... There's no excuse for those lines.

Same in Australia, but Saturday. School locations are already well matched to density and access needs. Bonus... the schools get to do fundraising BBQs and bake sales on the day.

This may be true within its premises but the premises are the too limited: it’s straightforward to eliminate queues by not requiring that ballots be filled out at the polling location. Oregon implemented this decades ago:https://www.vox.com/21401321/oregon-vote-by-mail-2020-presidential-election …

Oregon of course has universal vote-by-mail, but the more important point isn’t that ballots are returned by mail, it’s that ballots are distributed by mail to registered voters, so the time-consuming part of the process is outsourced to voters’ homes.
