Many people debating lockdowns seem quite unable to debate empirical or semi-empirical questions, such as "is the death rate very bad?" or "would it be feasible to 'isolate the vulnerable'?" without abruptly shifting to value questions about whether the lockdowns are worth it.

It can both be true that the death rate is horrific and lockdowns are even worse for the country, but you cannot make people believe the latter by trying to gaslight them about the former.

Similarly, perhaps the death rate justifies putting a third of the country onto unemployment but you cannot convince people of that by shouting that death is bad.

Aren't we already isolating the vulnerable is nursing homes? And that has been a disaster

They weren't isolating nursing homes in NY. NY State forced nursing homes to accept COVID patients, thereby exposing the vulnerable.

Maybe unable; maybe simply disinclined. If someone has decided that continuing lockdowns is a non-starter no matter what, they may see little point arguing antecedents to that conclusion. The goal then is to simply to rhetorically undermine the pro-lockdown position.

Lockdowns are maintained by social force - consistent messaging, reinforced by the truth. At the top, we have leaders who aren’t distancing and who lie all the time. Our lockdowns, in most States, have been ineffective at halting spread of the virus.

An ineffective lockdown is all pain for almost no gain. The good deeds of the many sabotaged by the selfishness of the few. That’s what makes people so angry. The thought that people, by gathering in crowds unmasked, are deliberately destroying the gains we’ve suffered for

there are no empirical questions in America, because those questions might be answered with numbers, or perhaps inform our policy decisions - and we don't want that, because "debate" means ritually condemning Them and praising ourselves. Solving a problem would take that away.

Honestly, forget if the lockdowns are "worth it." Given the stats Cuomo released yesterday and global observations, perhaps a better question is if lockdowns work at all?https://twitter.com/BjornLomborg/status/1258352869427814404 …

The goal of lockdowns *is to push severe cases into the future*, so they don’t all swarm our hospitals at once. That’s literally the entire point.
