While some rural/exurban areas might escape entirely, rural places that get it might well look like Lombardy, as their older and sicker populations are mowed down in unimaginable numbers.https://twitter.com/asymmetricinfo/status/1242484831398825984 …

I think this is correct, but also think that people in rural areas are wrong. Yes, they won't get it on the subway. Instead they'll get it at church. And they will have almost no ICU beds available to handle the crisis. https://twitter.com/RonBrownstein/status/1242481781594419201 …

Hospitals that usually expect to send complicated cases to the city will find the cities have no beds available, because complacent outlying areas insisted governors ease up. So their small hospitals will just have to manage, understaffed & undersupplied.

Ultimately, it is those areas that would have the worst outbreaks (and also the best--variance would be high). The bad outliers would be names that lived on in horrified memory for decades.

Obviously, I can't see the future, but if you are sitting safe in your exurban or rural house and asking "Why should I suffer so the cities can be saved?" turn it around and ask "Why should an urban hospital take in my wife with complications when we forced them into a crisis?"

We are all in this together. That's what "nationalism" means.

True, however, the metro areas don't have a strong record of caring for the rural areas, either. https://globalhealth.harvard.edu/blog/medical-deserts-america-why-we-need-advocate-rural-healthcare …

Global. But maybe that’s easier to admit from an European point of view, since ‘nationalism’ really isn’t effective approach with this thing going around not having the faintest idea that we have quite a number of national borders on this continent 🙃

Except the US is based on Federalism. That's why different governors have implemented varying restictions. No need for Idaho to have the same restrictions as NYC.
