EVs are so disruptive that everybody is making them. And they are so distinctive that they all look like all SUVs ever did.

Why do they look like SUV?
I’d love an traditional but electric family hatchback.

Because the huge battery and (dual) drive train are built into a “skateboard” which elevates the floor, making the “SUV look” the most appropriate for large battery packs. It also happens to be the most desired form factor today so why not perpetuate it?

I would guess it's about wheelbase optimization: how to include as much internal space as possible into an aerodynamic (and not extremely ugly) four-door vehicle with good visibility.

Nope. For that optimization the best configuration would be a minivan. SUVs are notorious for bigness without room. Weight without cargo capacity, etc. Worst of all worlds. Literally.

Seeking variety? In #ThinMobility category, EVs 39” wide or thinner qualify which allow many shapes, speeds & weights. Thus: light (neighborhood) scooter and heavy (highway-capable) short-narrow track 🚗 for hopefully truly (not sarcastically) disruptive EVs. It’s the width. 😎

Did you see Audi's Urbansphere announcement? 🤦♂️ The absurdity is beyond words really.
