Looking forward to discussing and collision avoidance this week in Silicon Valley. Following last week's 'close call' in space, will focus on today's reality--highly congested space. ' preparing ELSA-d to ensure safety.

The US Govt's Orbital Debris Mitigation Standard Practices were updated in response to a rapidly changing environment 🛰️ So what exactly has changed and why did they need to be updated? Our VP of Global Space Policy breaks it down in this blog.

Thank you for stopping by during your tech track to hear how we are using for good to clean up Earth's orbits. And thanks for the chocolates! Can you figure out what it means? 🤔

7/ We'll wrap this up with a quote which all players in space must consider before launching. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" RT if you agree! 🔚 of thread.

6/ We are getting closer to 🧹 the orbital highways, but we can't do this alone. Operators should future-proof satellite design with disposal in mind and go above current guidelines which are no longer adequate. Govts should also continue to fund debris removal missions.

5/ It is 🔮 clear that the time to act is now. We need better certainty that the space environment is one within which investments can operate and thrive instead of spending their time and 💸 dodging debris.

4/ Space is big but the orbits that we use are limited and that "space" is only going to become more & more crowded with more & more (Let us remind you there are approx. 2,000 satellites in orbit now and we are going to see +40,000 new ones in the next 10 years).

3/ How many more near misses are we going to shrug off and accept before an actual collision happens where the effects could be catastrophic to our orbits and put spacecraft 🛰️🚀and even crewed missions 👩‍🚀👨‍🚀 at risk?

2/ This was an example of debris on debris getting wayyy too close for comfort. Both satellites cannot move and were not equipped for removal before launch. We are simply relying on hope for a miss - this is not a strategy for future sustainability 🌎

1/ Thread time because it's time to get serious about (not that we weren't before). approx. 3⃣ collision avoidance maneuvers are performed every day to avoid ? And this near miss is one of 5⃣ in the past 5⃣ months?

Very cool (and scary) video from which shows how crowded low Earth orbit will become over the next 10 years if all proposed launch. And btw this is in addition to the other 20,000 other objects which are already being tracked. Space needs rules!
