I'll be joining the faculty at in New Zealand in a continuing position as a lecturer in astronomy, from Feb. It's been a long road, but a good'un. Thanks to everyone who's helped along the way, and looking forward to many more adventures with you all!

Interstellar visitors like ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov might soon have much to tell us about planetary formation and the conditions near distant stars — or even within other galaxies.

Delicate shades of white and pink over Nunavut. Lakes are silk-flat, picked out among the crinkled hills all draped by snow. Such beauty.

I was somewhat hoping there might be a rail + sea route, but that remains tricky

Managed to almost entirely travel Europe by train and ferry. NZ1 remains the longest direct flight in the world.

Been an immigrant in four lands, a visitor for times short and long in many more. One-way flights always feel strange, but this one in particular: I haven't lived in New Zealand in twelve years. Lots to learn, and re-learn

Good to see megaconstellation discussions starting to happen - now to keep efforts coordinated internationally

With ʻOumuamua a few years ago, and 2I/Borisov a few months ago, scientists saw up close, for the first time, objects born near distant stars. Planetary astronomer explains why we’re likely to see many more this decade, and why that’s exciting.

Very nice new piece in Quanta Magazine by on Interstellar Visitors and what we've learned, what questions we have, and what can do to help further our understanding. Link here:

Hey! New Horizons is so far away that Proxima Cen shifts by 32 arcsec and Wolf 359 by 16, and we're going to show that by taking images of their fields on April 22-23 and comparing them to simultaneous Earth-based images.

A responsible option would be to launch after the brightness issues are fixed. That has not happened.

There's a lot of scared discourse around the new coronavirus, and specifically around a concept called R0. I wrote this piece about what that number is, what it means, and--crucially--what it does NOT mean.
