please share your stories of crunching on reviews. everyone in this dang industry does this and it's the worst. far from being something to brag about ("I had to beat this game in three days!") it's a symptom of how writers, esp freelancers, get exploited for their time/laborhttps://twitter.com/duckvalentine/status/1184912911271186434 …

More time is always, ALWAYS better

Fair point!

I think it's fine to give less time for shorter games, but a week minimum before embargo has been helpful in the past. It also helps for planning, as it ensures editors can assign titles to folks who'll be the best for the review rather than just whoever is available.
-
I RTed this though as I haven't been an active reviewer, so others may have better responses than me!

Obv. shorter games naturally need less time, but I honestly think the longer the better in any instance - it gives time for an opinion to settle. There have definitely been occasions when my tack on a game changed after a little time to sleep on it, but that's rarely a luxury.
-
Oh yeah, that's an interesting point. Especially if there's a strong narrative and/ or characters to think on.

I'm a politics journalist but I can tell you that embargoed stories don't really get lost in the shuffle. Even before we had the ability to automate publication scheduling, an embargoed story is usually a big deal and so would be tracked by editors.
-
Honestly I always forget most things are just scheduled in (until someone blames their scheduling system for breaking embargo
).

That makes sense! I end up worrying so much about them because we basically throw codes into the void and just hope for the best come embargo lift day.
