Whittling down the case for a jubilee—the cancellation of debts and rebalancing of power between regular people and elites—to 1000 words meant leaving out most of the history. The connection between debt and democracy is profound. Here's what got cut. 🧵

You should read this interview with one of our Co-founders, . "Astra Taylor co-founded Debt Collective, the first union for debtors, nearly a decade ago. Broad student loan forgiveness could be the union’s biggest win."

Today the NYT editorial board came out against student debt cancellation. They are so desperate for arguments opposing relief they cite Betsy DeVos twice. It's so awful we annotated it. I advise you read our version. It has facts, sass and a moral core.

An important throughline for many white supremacist terrorists, including the Buffalo suspect, is ecofascism. They believe in imminent resource scarcity — even climate change — in the U.S. But instead of blaming corporations for pollution and inequality, they blame immigrants.

we've been saying the fight to cancel student debt is about more than student debt. it's an inroad to deeper questions about our whole political economy. people in power agree, and that's why the guns are coming out.

I’m grateful to for annotating this awful NYT editorial against canceling student debt—but it’s also telling that the editorial begins by noting that student debt is causing generational harm, before saying it shouldn’t be canceled 🤬

The Debt Collective has done more to change the course of federal higher education policy than all the experts who are now desperately doubling down on the nation's failed experiment on debt-financing of a basic governmental benefit

Pearly Young, 77, was killed today in shopping for groceries. For 25 years she ran a pantry where every Saturday she fed people in Central Park. Every. Saturday. She loved singing, dancing, & being with family. She was mother, grandma, & missionary. Gone too soon 🕊
