I was originally able to swap out the sd cards and boot whatever I wanted, without disabling eMMC, because the SD slot is first in the boot order. But that stopped working after I installed Armbian and I have no idea why.

I have never flashed the eMMC, always kept the vanilla install there .. I don't use it really but keep it there as additional "bootable" storage , my main OSes are always off microSDs this is something that I like about the Pinebook a lot.
