I so wish someone could explain to the Arab world the meaning of ’landscape mode’. Seriously, it exists on smartphone, you just have to turn the bloody thing around. I mean, how do they watch films in cinemas - vertically?
I’m guessing because the need to document clashes w survival instincts (though it’s possible to document while fleeing, w quasi-decent zoom/stabilization tech in smartphones.) At any rate, photo/video framing is a technique that needs to be taught.

I do see that many of the youths filming are very nervous amongst shootings etc. I do understand that they have problems focusing on technical issues. But also in non-combat situations landscape mode is a total secret to many. Truly puzzling.

Totally agreed. I think downtime workshops can help, not much else but spreading tips & tutorials maybe. (Ofc I wouldn't presume to lecture media activists getting shot at, I've only ever captured teargas clashes at worst. https://www.flickr.com/photos/asterios/3090761323/in/album-72157623489773707/ …)

Awareness obviously needs to be raised way before any critical situations, in normal ordinary life. Ask them if they ever saw a movie in portrait mode … Wait, if it clicks. If not … sigh. Start from scratch and try to explain the dots and how to connect them. Only way.
