And I'm obviously speaking from a European PoV, and my way earlier work in IT-related projects, though the climate hasn't improved. If anything, the startup mentality has overtaken society-positive research (imo).

I'm not so sure outside of academia things are much better but hey.. human beings are a creative lot. If there's a way to break a system; I expect nothing less ;-)

Yeah, but if you've gone through it hoping to help make the world a better place, it's dispiriting to see it reduced to yet another predatory implement. On some level, I regret ditching it for activism & journalism, though I'll always care about science.

totally feel you on that btw. Especially on science :) (but then it saved my life many times so I'm kinda bias)
