Beware (much worse) weaponisation by states via "regulation"https://twitter.com/nicolasterry/status/973007065299013632 …
I'm well aware of the general quandary, as I've been grappling with it for decades (as you know). I'm specifically -not theoretically- asking what do you propose we do with YT's recommendation algorithms promoting fascist propaganda.

Specifically, on changes to be imposed by states: "do nothing", regardless of whatever causes it — I still regard freedom of speech as sadly broken in Europe, still prefer the US 1st Amdmt. The other way around: could we restrict state intervention allowing only "good" changes?

On the other hand, there is even then something one can do: with our feet, eyeballs, money, misc social pressure. Put content elsewhere, link elsewhere, visit elsewhere — even states can do that in their roles as users. Not trivial, I know (linking to YT too much, myself)

As for states promoting alternatives by funding them: something interesting may result if e.g. supporting development of alternative free software platforms… instead of offering €€ to local gorillas as in this classic https://beta.techcrunch.com/2008/03/15/so-thats-what-the-eu-does-with-all-that-microsoft-money/ …
