It's driving me nuts, most people just moved off Picasa & Flickr to iPhotos or Google Photos as if their archival needs were met, but we haven't even solved the multiple taxonomy vs location issue. Really open to suggestions here :)

Same. I have pics in multiple locations, no way to merge them even though nondestructive deduplication seems relatively trivial. Then how to continue to add to a single repository which is verifiably backed up? Surely an opportunity for someone who can figure out monetisation

Sorting/deduplication isn't really trivial or error-free, whether performed manually or mechanically, unless you retain a full backup of the original archive (plus the need to backup current state).

I'm kind of OK with that, and how far to trust the automation and retain all originals is a choice, but it really ought to be possible to merge collections reasonably effectively into a usable set! (I had to migrate from Aperture to Lightroom; tl;dr bad fail)

Preach :) I'm currently at a loss on which single piece of software I can trust to perform alterations, deduplication, metadata tagging and reversible/extractable local archiving, and I'm tired of wasting effort, material & diskspace to find out.
