And generally speaking, I've had it with Hollywood's weaksauce output these past few yrs; in most categories, it is routinely inferior to int'l productions that rarely get the distribution they deserve.

I have the same question. I think remakes fail because screenwriters try to "adapt" the scripts to a different reality, and then season them with happy endings that the original stories sometimes don't have.

I mean, if anyone competent/vaguely empathic involved in production had even watched the original, they would've been floored by the force of the leads' acting & the depth of history that produces such storytelling & given up on remaking it.
