I'm not recommending Fedora, or unrecommending it, it's default that I fell into some years ago. These days everything is gnome 3 anyways

Know what you mean, mate, same w me & Ubuntu. Ported from Debian sid/kubuntu, eons ago. Much prefer Mate to Unity, at any rate.

sometime when you feel like it, I would love to hear a rundown of the differences (mate/unity).

I can tell you now. Unity wasn't mean for PC desktop, never warmed up to it or other "touch" DM's (eg. W8+). Mate is functional Gnome 2 lite

Oh, most definitely. Maybe even lighter than main Gnome 2. Aesthetics aren't much an issue either. At least the Mate aesthetics work for me.

That was going to be my other question, appearance; now that I've gotten used to modern graphics, is Mate going to poke me in the eye?

Honestly, it's nice. Not macosx but mint mate is really good. And functional, stable. Faaast. Just try a usb boot with the last mint

(I mean, I know it's not a panel issue, they look pretty crisp on default Unity. And I have tried tweaking Mate on Ubuntu.)
