As I remember it, it haunted us because Bob Geldof and a few others raised the issue exactly bc people didn't care, media coverage was scant

"Biafra" was already a household synonym in Greece for famine by then. Agreed that Band Aid helped, but we weren't unaware of Ethiopia here.

Possibly b/c of the ties between Greece & Ethiopia, the Greek Orthodox church has a presence there, and it likely fundraised at the time.

It was covered in Italy too, but there as far as I remember there was no mobilization until Band Aid. Sadly, due to Italian colonial past.

Arguably, Band Aid catalyzed the celebrity-powered fast response system. But scalability, efficiency & accountability issues persist today.
