Granted it's an old rig, but it handled Rise of the Tomb Raider combat framerates fine (when Windows wasn't hogging up resources, that is)

I don't want to be one of those people but have you considered Win10? Apart from frying my HD it's been great. Also got a SSHD.

yeah sometimes I look at all that crap running and groan but performance wise Win10 just seems smoother. I've had no update snarls.

I could conceivably get a new rig, but I loathe conceding all that horsepower to the OS b/c it's a hog & I'm lazy :p

I've been impressed with how Win10 handles my odd setup: crap old chip, good Graphics card, low RAM. On win7 things would struggle.

yeah, too bad the days of affordable midrange GPUs are over, again. Suppose I have to splurge to expect a 3-yr viable FPS lifetime

the day will come when I can't run new (fps) games and I'll just have to play my enormous backlog of games :-/

my new "passable gaming rig" landmark is whatever can run XCOM 2+mods in a pinch. Thankfully, the Macbook (barely) manages :)
