good tip. I wonder though if banks would take offense, seems they intentionally print a secret confirmation code on the damn thing

I think coz it's expedient (for them) and most card holders are not good at remembering PINs. Card Co's make retailers cover losses

also, that doesn't fly as a reason as PINs aren't printed on cards (at least they get security that much). So why are CVV2's?

because the PIN is used at the bank, no third party to offload the losses onto. Retailers should demand same safeguards as banks.
