Someone have a lighthearted, geeky conversation with me?
sweeping, plodding series like Ice & Fire and the Wheel of Time killed my classic fantasy appetite, hope to rekindle it in 2017

You're in luck. There's bloody excellent stuff out there now. I'd start w Grace of Kings & City of Stairs
-
Try the stormlight archive too :D

Sanderson is cool in my book, just for rescuing The Wheel of Time into a proper close. I should check out his other work

I'm not into Sanderson, don't buy his characters. But you might try Daniel Abraham-one of the 2 guy's behind the Expanse

in WoT, Sanderson had to work w established chars, I think he did a better job of it than Jordan himself in his later novels
-
I never got the WoT thing. Never even finished the first book. My brother devoured them.
-
WoT was an early acquired taste, much like Feist's Midkemia series. Most of my geek buddies started on it in high school
-
Mine too, just never happened for me. I think I was reading mostly fantasy by women, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Katherine Kurtz etc.
