I'll just reup this solid mini-thread by @muiz on the deeper optics of the Rogue One conflict https://twitter.com/muiz/status/809416391359139841 … with which I concur

The uncanny valley moments and Giacchino's soundtrack were the major letdowns in this otherwise mostly competent & gritty Star Wars flick
-
Even though, on balance, I kinda liked R1's ragtag rebel squad, Daisy Ridley's Mary Sue remains the most engaging new char in the franchise
-
Aw, c'mon, don't call her a Mary Sue. How gritty, by the way? Major character death gritty? Thinking about my kid seeing it.
-
erm, not exactly Revenge of the Sith-traumatic, but close in intent. (She's an archetypical Mary Sue, but Daisy made her work fine)
-
Thanks...I haven't seen Revenge of The Sith, I gave up at Attack of the Clones, but will ponder.
-
unfortunately, Rogue One has none of the artistry of, say, Westworld in establishing chars. But crowds will enjoy it regardless
-
Sure. Just my kid is unusually tender-hearted for a 12 year old, and if likeable main characters die I'll never hear the end of it.
